BA2 Urban 48 A/H Portable Dual Battery

The Urban 48ah is a portable dual battery system for vehicles that cannot fit an auxiliary battery under the bonnet. There are a wide range of vehicles that fit into this category on the market today and one of these may be yours. But we have the alternative, the 48ah Urban offers the versatility of a dual battery system, which can be isolated from the main vehicle battery but still offer the capability of a spike protected jump-starter.

The Thumper range is used as a portable Dual Battery System for vehicles which cannot fit a dual battery system under the bonnet. The unit offers the versatility of a dual battery system, which can be separated from the vehicle and used as a portable battery bank that offers the capability of spike protected jump-starting.

What type of batteries are used in the Urban range

The battery packs consist of the latest AGM cells; Absorbed glass mat. These cells are completely maintenance free so they require little to no attention. Simply charge and use. The AGM batteries allow for not only deep cycling but they additionally allow for cranking ability. The cells like to charge at a voltage rate between 13-14 Volts, Which means that they are fully capable of charging via the supplied vehicle charging kit.

Will they leak or spill?

No.  The AGM batteries completely sealed batteries, meaning that you will not have to worry about the cells leaking acid, fuses, gases or any nasty odours.  Due to the fact the batteries are completely sealed, it allows for the batteries to be stored on any one of their sides – even up-side down while working to full efficiency!

Can I store the unit in a non ventilated area, such as under a bed?

Yes. Considering that the batteries are completely sealed it means that the batteries do not require a ventilated area for storage. This results in the perfect battery to have stored in an ‘out of the way’ area such as under a bed in a caravan or under a vehicles seat, even in a draw in the back of a 4WD!

Can I use Solar Panels to charge my unit?

Yes. Solar Panels can be used for charging and/or maintaining the urban battery packs. Keep in mind that solar panels that are rated at 10 watts or higher must be regulated connected to any type of battery. This will prevent the solar panel from over-charging the battery and potentially causing damage.

Have a look at our range of solar panels to find the one to suit you.

Will it run my fridge?

Yes it will and many other appliances also! One of the main accessories in which people use the Urban range is for running 12/240 Volt compressor type fridges. As the batteries are deep cycle it allows for the running of accessories even while the battery is charging through the vehicle charging system. Solar or even 240 Volt!

We do not recommend running gas fridges for prolonged durations due to the high power draw (approx 12+ Amps per hour).

How long will the Urban battery last while running appliances?

The duration of time that the Getaway battery packs will last with running accessories such as a fridge largely depends on the amp draw of the appliance in question.

For example: a fridge with an average draw of 1 amp per hour would run for 30hours with a 30amp hour unit.
To work out the size you need simply multiply the average amp per hour draw of your fridge by the amount of hours you want your fridge to run for. Take into account that if you are driving a little every day your unit will be recharging i.e. 1 hour of driving you will have put 25% charge back into your battery.

Can I use inverters for a 240 Volt appliances?

Yes. We offer a range of ‘Inverter – units’, which allows for the battery system’s 12 Volt power to be converted into 240 Volts which can then be used for the running 240Volt appliances. The Inverter units come in the Getaway range which includes 3 sizes – 75ah - 600watt, 90ah 1200watt, and 90ah 2200watt.

Also available is the Thumper standard which is 60ah 600 watts.

These units can be used to power 240 volt fans, TV’s, power-tools, charging mobile phones and laptop computers.

Will the Urban start my diesel?

The Urban range will jump start most diesel engines but we do recommend the Thumper range of portable dual battery system which have a higher cranking output.

Can I charge straight from my vehicles alternator?

The Urban portable battery systems are sold with an in car charging kit that is rated to the size of the power-pack purchased. It is strongly advised that these kits are fitted for optimal charging of the battery system.

The In car charge kit will allow the battery to charge from the vehicle’s alternator with an approximate recharge time between 2-4 hours. The In car charge kit is designed to activate from the ignition when the vehicle is started. This will also isolate the Urban battery from your vehicle battery. This means that your Urban will only charge when your vehicle is running.
With an In car charge kit fitted you will never flatten your vehicles battery while running your accessories again.

Is jump-starting my vehicle safe?

YES! Jump – starting with the Urban range is perfectly safe for both the unit and your vehicle. The Urban range is completely ‘spike protected ‘which means that you will not incur any of those nasty voltage spikes which could potentially fry vehicles internal circuits and cause you thousands of dollars in vehicle repairs.

What is the life expectancy of the batteries used?

The AGM cells used in the Urban range have a life expectancy between 5 – 9 years.  The life of the Urban range largely depends on the method in which the unit is charged.  Over 10 years on the market has proved that the life expectancy of the units increase when the units are charged via the provided ‘In car charge kit’. When the unit is not in use (discharged regularly), the best method of maintaining the battery is leaving the unit connected to it’s in car charging kit. This maintains the battery and aids in prolonging the life of the cells used in the battery pack.

What is the warranty of the Urban?

The Urban offers a 2 – year warranty from the date of your purchase.

What do I do when my cells in my unit die?

Although the Urban range offers a 2 year warranty and has a life expectancy between 5 – 9 years…We offer our customers the chance to have there unit repacked when the cells do eventually die out! Once a customer has paid for a repack we offer our customers a new 2-year warranty on the unit from the date of purchase.

240 Volt Charging

Only use fully regulated automatic battery chargers to charge the Urban unit. Do not exceed 30% of the unit’s capacity (e.g. 48AH Urban use a maximum charger of 14.4 Amps)

Can I charge my unit and discharge it at the same time?

YES! This is the perfect way to use your power pack. Each socket on the unit can be used to discharge or recharge the unit. (We do not recommend charging the unit straight from a vehicle’s cigarette socket, as the unit will never reach fully charge).

Can I charge my unit straight from my generator?

Yes, in most cases. BE CAREFUL not to let the voltage exceed 14.5 volts or damage will occur to the unit and you will void warranty. We recommend putting a regulated battery charger between the generator and your unit to ensure that no voltage spikes occur.

What is an Amp Hour?

Amp hour is the rated capacity of the unit. If a unit holds 60AH and you discharged the unit using a fluorescent light that draws 1 Amp per hour the unit would last for duration of 60 hours before needing recharging.

Where and how are the Urban units made?

The urban range is proudly South Australian made and owned. Each unit is hand made from start to finish to produce the best portable dual battery system with the highest cranking power available on the market!

What is the difference between the Urban 30AH and 48AH and Thumper 30AH and 48AH

The Thumper and the Urban range are the exact same capacity but there are distinctive differences….they are as follows

  1. The Urban uses wing nut terminals for jump starting and 240 volt charge input. The Thumper has a 175 Amp Anderson connector. The major difference here is that the Thumper does not lose as much power as a voltage drop through the Anderson plug, however the Urban will lose more through the wing nut terminals – so cranking ability is much higher in the Thumper HIGH CRANK series.
  2. Internally the Urban consists of Standard size cables and the Thumper has much heavier internal cables…this is to assist with the high cranking ability of the Thumper plus the faster recharge time that the Thumper has when compared to the Thumper.
  3. The Urban battery system uses an LED indicator to show the power packs state of charge (voltage level). Where as the Thumper has an LCD digital volt meter which indicates a more accurate reading of the batteries internal charge.
  4. The Urban range is protected via a glass fuse, where as the Thumper has a resettable circuit breaker – eliminating the need to carry fuses.
  5. The Urban range offers x 2 cig socket outlets, where as the Thumper offers x 2 Merit type sockets and x 1 cig socket.

The main differences between the Urban and the Thumper is the cranking ability and slightly faster charge time.
